This morning I was reading Psalms 77. The Psalmist was feeling helpless and even hopeless. He was wondering where God was and if God was still showing His handiwork. Then the Psalmist stated that inspite of the desolation he felt in his relationship with God, he knew the Lord's goodness and remembered His mighty works "of old". He then began to name many of the ways that he had seen God at work in his life. He shares verses full of God's deeds. The Psalmist states how God's power is shown to His people and how even nature itself resounds the power of God. The Psalmist speaks of God's glory through the seas and lightening, and thundering, and then He ends with something that seems out of place. He says "The voice of Thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightenings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. Thy way is in the sea and Thy path in the great waters, and Thy footsteps are not known. Thou leadest Thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron."
I read this and was caught off guard. The poetic phrases of how God often shows His power and goodness to us abruptly ended with the phrase of how God used Moses and Aaron to lead his people. I was taken back for a moment and asked, "God, how does this fit in with the readings about Your holiness and power." "God, this seems out of place to me." It was then that I was gently prodded with the response, "Isn't it the greatest of wonders that I have chosen to use mere men for My work on earth?".
Wow! Consider that! God has chosen to use people like Moses and Aaron, people like me and you, to show His love and deliverance here on Earth. Perhaps the greatest wonder of all, however, is that He, Himself, became man in the person of Jesus Christ to show is great love for us. What a thought! That last verse of Psalm 77 doesn't seem so out of place anymore.
As I reflect on what I have read and learned this morning, I am indeed aware of how powerful it is for God to be able to use people, to use me, to share His love.
Father God,
Thank you for showing your love for us in the most wondrous of ways. You became flesh for us so that we could know You. Thank you for that. Thank you too for being willing to use me, all broken and quite imperfect to share your love with others. I pray that I will honor You with my life and will be the example that You have set me apart to be. I love you, Father. Thank you for your love.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen
Beautifully written and such a wonderful reminder!
